Alabama’s Native Wildflowers

My Alabama wildflowers were sparked by a trip to Colorado, where I was awestruck by the prevalence and beauty of their native flowers. I became acutely aware of how few native flowers are visible to the public in Alabama. Most of what surrounds our homes and public spaces is commercially specialized, non-native plantings that offer little to our native pollinators. In wild areas, invasive species crowd out natives, which further limits the habitat and food sources for wildlife, weakens the ecosystem, and makes it harder for our native plants to survive. Through these works, I invite you to look more closely at Alabama’s plant ecology and imagine a future where the native flora is not only preserved but celebrated.
